Local SEO

Most local buying decisions are made in the map pack, not on page one of the blue links. Local SEO is the work of getting your business into that box for the searches that produce phone calls.

Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba — working with businesses across Canada, the US, and internationally.

What local SEO actually is

When somebody searches for a service near them, Google shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. That box gets the overwhelming majority of the attention, and the businesses in it get the calls. Everyone else is competing for what is left.

Local SEO is the practice of getting into that box and staying there. It is a different discipline from general SEO, because Google ranks local results on a different set of signals: how relevant your business is to the search, how close you are to the searcher, and how prominent you are compared with the alternatives.

What we work on

The work splits into a handful of areas, and neglecting any one of them caps what the others can achieve.

  • Your Google Business Profile. Categories, services, service area, hours, photos, and posts. This is the single biggest lever in local search and the one most businesses set up once and never revisit.
  • Reviews. Volume, recency, and how you respond. A steady flow of recent reviews moves local rankings and does more for conversion than anything else on the page.
  • Consistent business information. Your name, address, and phone number as they appear across directories and listings. Contradictions make Google less certain about you, and certainty is what it ranks on.
  • Location-relevant pages. Real content about the areas and services you actually cover, not a template with the city name swapped.
  • Technical foundations. A fast, crawlable site with correct local business markup, so Google can read what you do and where you do it.

How long it takes

Google Business Profile work can move within weeks, because you are correcting and completing signals Google is already looking at. Ranking improvements for competitive local searches usually take three to six months, and longer in dense markets with established competitors.

We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a month and disappear. If you need customers this week, advertising is the honest answer, and we will say so.

FAQ

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Regular SEO is about ranking pages in the standard search results. Local SEO is about ranking your business in the map pack and local results, which Google ranks using relevance, distance from the searcher, and prominence. The two overlap, but local SEO puts much more weight on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and consistent business information across the web.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Google Business Profile improvements can show results within a few weeks because you are completing signals Google already reads. Competitive local rankings typically take three to six months, and longer in dense urban markets. Anyone promising first place in thirty days is either guessing or misleading you.

Do I need a physical storefront to rank locally?

No. Service-area businesses that travel to customers can rank in local results without a storefront, by defining a service area on the Google Business Profile instead of displaying an address. The requirement is that you genuinely serve those areas, because Google verifies businesses and removes ones that misrepresent where they operate.
